Getting About in Leicester: The Student Guide to Transport

When it comes to transport, you can rely on Leicester! With cycle lanes, direct trains to other big cities and a free shuttle bus, there’s plenty here to help you get where you need to be. In this blog, we’re sharing some of the best ways to get about.

Free City Centre Shuttle Bus: Hop!

The Hop! is a free, anti-clockwise circular bus route that operates around Leicester's city centre. With services running up to every 10 minutes during peak times and every 8 minutes during off-peak hours, the Hop! connects key locations such as Haymarket Bus Station and Leicester Railway Station. Buses

Our Leicester site is close to bus stops including those on Humberstone Gate. These run through the city, eventually reaching Haymarket Bus Station in the centre. Leicester is also home to St Margaret’s Bus Station, the first carbon neutral station in the UK. Both stations allow you to travel around the city with ease, giving you access to locations like Nelson Mandela Park and Mattioli Woods Welford Road Stadium - the home of the famous Tigers!

Trains

If you’re travelling further-afield, Leicester Railway Station has direct connections to major cities including London, Nottingham and Sheffield. There are only four platforms at the station, so you’ll find it hard to get lost in here! For cyclists, there is also a sheltered cycle hub with CCTV. The station can be accessed from the free Hop! Shuttle, or you can walk there from our accommodation in around 10 minutes.

Cycling

Prefer to travel on two wheels? The city features numerous cycling lanes and paths, so you can travel around with ease. The Leicester Bike Park in Town Hall Square offers secure parking facilities for those who choose to explore the city by bicycle.
